Alaska - Day 1

We got around well this morning and left the park here in San Onofre at 10 AM. We drove north on I-5 to the Newport Freeway, then to the Riverside Freeway and finally north on I-15 in Colton toward San Bernardino. We will be on I-15 until we cross into Canada north of Great Falls, MT. The temperature was still in the high 60’s as we headed up 4,500 foot Cajon Pass and into Victorville. The temperature finally started to climb as we began to descend into the Mojave desert and by the time we got to Barstow it was in the 90’s.

We stopped for fuel at the Flying J in Barstow. It was the first time we had fueled since leaving Quartzsite and we put in 166 gallons. The cost was just under $500, but that will hold us for the next several days. We should get about 1200-1400 miles before we need to refuel again.

The temperature continued to climb and by the time we went through Baker it was up to 103 where it stayed all the way into Las Vegas. We drove directly to Sam’s Town RV Park on Boulder Highway were we always stay when in town. It was way to hot to do much of anything but go swimming and walk over to the casino to get ice cream. We grilled hamburgers and hot dogs for dinner and then Nana and the kids played games until bedtime.
